WHERE WE WORK

Asset finance in Dorset

Funding for the vehicles, plant and equipment Dorset businesses run on. The office is in Bournemouth.

The businesses we fund here

Dorset's economy isn't one thing, and the funding requests reflect that.

The marine trades around Poole harbour bring boatyard equipment, lifting and handling gear, workshop machinery and the commercial vehicles that move it all around. It's seasonal work with a long winter, which shapes both when businesses want to buy and how they want to pay for it.

Construction and groundworks run right across the Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch conurbation and out into the county. Excavators, telehandlers, tippers and site equipment, usually bought against work already won rather than speculatively.

Defence and engineering cluster inland around Bovington and Winfrith, along with the specialist suppliers and machining businesses that sit behind them. The assets there tend to be higher value and longer lived, and the buying decisions are planned further out.

Hospitality matters on this coast in a way it doesn't further inland. Kitchen equipment, refrigeration, delivery vehicles and fit-outs, almost always bought between seasons rather than during them, because nobody refits a kitchen in August.

Agriculture runs west from the Blackmore Vale, dairy and arable both, with tractors, handling systems and trailers on replacement cycles set by the farming year rather than the financial one.

How it actually works

Most of it happens by phone and email, and that isn't a limitation.

A funding conversation needs to establish what the asset is, what it's for and what the business looks like. None of that requires anyone to drive anywhere. Documents move electronically, the funder assesses, and the money reaches the supplier.

Where Dorset differs is that meeting in person is genuinely easy when it helps. Darren travels for the deals that warrant it, and being twenty minutes from most of the county means a conversation next to the machine is possible in a way it simply isn't in Berkshire.

What we don't have is a branch network. There's one office, in Bournemouth, and the people you speak to are the people arranging the funding.

Products that come up most here

Vehicle and asset finance accounts for most of it, which follows from an economy built on construction, marine and agriculture. Vans, plant and machinery, bought against work rather than in hope of it. Vehicle & asset finance.

Refinance comes up more here than the county's size would suggest, because a lot of Dorset businesses own their kit outright and are asset rich at precisely the moments they're cash tight. Releasing capital from a paid-off fleet is often a better answer than borrowing against the business. Refinance.

Invoice finance follows the construction sector, where retention and staged payments create gaps that have nothing to do with whether the business is profitable. Invoice finance.

VAT and corporation tax funding shows up seasonally, particularly across hospitality, where a strong summer produces a bill that lands in a much quieter quarter. VAT & corporation tax funding.
