Hampshire's funding requirements are shaped by the port more than by anything else.

Southampton pulls in hauliers, freight forwarders, container handling operators and the maintenance businesses that keep them running. Tractor units, trailers, reach stackers, forklifts and yard equipment, all worked hard and replaced on cycles that rarely align with when the cash happens to be available.

The marine sector runs along the Solent and up the Hamble. Boatyards, riggers, chandlers and marine engineers, with the lifting gear, workshop equipment and specialist tooling that goes with them. As in Dorset it's seasonal, and the buying happens in the quiet months.

Aerospace and defence cluster around Farnborough, together with the precision engineering and machining businesses in that supply chain. CNC equipment, inspection kit and production machinery, usually high value and specified a long time before it's ordered.

Inland, the Test Valley and the downs are agricultural. Arable at scale, with the machinery values that implies, plus the livestock and equine businesses spread across the county.

Basingstoke and the M3 corridor add distribution and light industrial work, which tends to mean vehicles and materials handling rather than production machinery.

How it actually works

By phone in almost every case, and that suits the geography.

Hampshire is close enough that meeting is possible when it genuinely helps, and far enough that driving over for a conversation which could have been a phone call wastes everyone's morning.
